NEW DELHI: The government informed Parliament on Friday that National Commission for Protection of Child Rights received 77 complaints of child abuse in childcare institutions and shelter homes, between 2018-19 & 2022-23.
In a reply to a question in Lok Sabha, women and child development minister Smriti Irani said, “The commission has received 77 complaints of child abuse in child care institutions, including shelter homes, across the country during the last five years up to 2022-23.”
The highest number of child abuse cases at CCIs and shelter homes were recorded in 2018-19 at 26, followed by 21 in 2021-22, 13 in 2020-21, 12 in 2019-20 and five in 2022-23.Among states and UTs, highest number of such cases were reported from Uttar Pradesh at 12, followed by Bihar (9).
In response to another question, the minister said 5,175 children were registered on the Go Home and Re-Unite (GHAR) portal meant for repatriation. The GHAR portal has been developed by NCPCR to monitor and track restoration and repatriation of children as per the protocols under the Juvenile Justice Act.
NCPCR has also developed a ‘monitoring app for seamless inspection” of CCIs and 5,347 inspections have been conducted using this app.
