KOLKATA: Bengal finance minister Chandrima Bhattacharya on Sunday lodged an FIR against BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya for “criminal and contemptuous allegations” that Sandeshkhali ED attack suspect Sheikh Shahjahan had Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s “patronage” while on the run.
“He has no business to defame and indignify the highest administrative chair in Bengal,” Bhattacharya said in her complaint at Kolkata’s Nimta police station. The minister urged police to treat her complaint as an FIR and alleged that Malviya’s post on X was “tantamount to hatred and may cause serious breach of peace”.
In his post on Sunday, Malviya alleged: “…Shahjahan, who claimed to be don of Sandeshkhali, is absconding. This would not have been possible without the patronage of Mamata Banerjee, who is also the home minister of West Bengal.”
Malviya also posted a photo of the CM in a car with then TMC Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal after the Bogtui killings. Bhattacharya’s FIR mentions Malviya’s reference to this “unrelated” photo.
Mondal has been in jail since August 2022 in a CBI case on cattle smuggling. In the Bogtui killings, 10 people were burnt alive in Birbhum’s Bogtui hamlet in March 2022 after a local Trinamul leader’s murder.
