NEW DELHI: The most difficult phase during the operation was from the time the auger got stuck in a web of pipes, iron angles and concrete on Friday evening till the entire 46 metres of the auger was taken out to enable manual digging, reports Dipak Dash. PM’s adviser Bhaskar Khulbesaid, “This took time as the cutting had to be done in conditions where availability of oxygen was less. But we were always confident that the task will be successfully completed.”
The most difficult phase during the rescue operation at Silkyara tunnel was from the time the auger got stuck in a web of pipes, iron angles and concrete on Friday evening till the entire 46 metres of the auger was taken out to enable manual digging.
Speaking to TOI, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s adviser, Bhaskar Khulbe said it was important for the agencies involved to cut the auger into small pieces using gas cutters and take them out meticulously without damaging the pipe that had already been inserted. “This took time as the cutting had to be done in conditions where availability of oxygen was also less. But we were always confident that the task will be successfully completed. Deploying the expert workers in rat-hole mining (manual drilling) was always at the back of our mind. The company that had brought the auger machine had got these expert workers. They delivered more than others and did a great job in the rescue operation,” he said.
Khulbe said he recieved a call from the PMO on November 17 informing him that the PM wanted him to render his service for the rescue. “Next morning I reached the site. We pulled together all resources and brought together all agencies since this needed a coordinated effort. The successful evacuation of workers shows how when we assemble as Team India we can accomplish any task,” he said while adding how central and state government agencies, PSUs and private entities joined hands.
The former adviser to PM said ideas emanated from all the agencies and people involved in the operation and they did not hesitate to take the best and workable ideas for the rescue from anyone.
Hemank Gupta, project manager of Delhi-based Trenchless Engineering Services, which sent the 500-tonne capacity auger machine, manual drillers with expertise in rat-hole mining and gas cutters, said their company received a call from the PMO on November 14 and the next day the American auger was airlifted to the site.
“The auger getting stuck inside was a major concern and so it had to be cut. We deployed 15 people with gas cutters for this task. We had to take out the entire 47-48 metres of the auger after cutting it into pieces. Simultaneously, we got the manual drillers from Delhi by air who were working in a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project in East Delhi,” Gupta said.
He added that manual drillers had to clear the rubble for barely 5-6 metres and the soil in the remaining portion was soft and could then be pierced by the pipe which reached the trapped workers.
