NEW DELHI: Accusing the Modi government of herding the opposition with a whip without any regard for their rights in Parliament, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge responded to home minister Amit Shah’s outreach to the protesting opposition by alleging “a world of difference between his words and actions”.

Kharge told Shah that he chose to make an “emotional plea to the opposition with the expectation of a positive attitude” on the same day Prime Minister Narendra Modi linked his political rivals with the British rulers and a terrorist organisation — mocking that “there appears a lack of coordination within the government, on the lines of the gulf between the ruling camp and the opposition”. “It is not only absurd but also unfortunate for the PM to call the opposition parties directionless,” Kharge said.
Kharge stuck to the opposition’s demand that Modi speak in Parliament on Manipur, adding that the PM appears to think that giving a statement in Parliament would hurt his honour.

Shah had on Tuesday said he had written to Kharge and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury—the opposition leaders in the two Houses of Parliament—urging them to rise above political divisions and to participate in a discussion on Manipur. Sources said the reply was discussed and approved by the INDIA bloc members at a meeting on Wednesday.
Kharge said small incidents had been exaggerated to hand out suspensions to opposition MPs for an entire parliamentary session, and even extended beyond a session in some instances, saying that was against the rules. He complained that opposition members had been giving adjournment notices daily, but treasury members had been creating disruptions. Also, he said, when the leader of the opposition stands up to speak after the chair’s permission, the leader of the House (Piyush Goyal) disrupts him.
