NEW DELHI: Ahead of state polls to be held simultaneously with LS elections in April-May, Andhra Pradesh CM Y S Jaganmohan Reddy called on PM Narendra Modi on Friday to repeat his demand for special category status for the state and clearance of pending projects.
Later, Reddy met FM Nirmala Sitharaman and made the same demand. He was accompanied by his colleague and RS member V Vijayasai Reddy. Reddy’s visit to Delhi and his meeting with PM Modi took place at a time when BJP is on the verge of an alliance with his main rival Telugu Desam Party, whose chief Chandrababu Naidu had recently met the BJP brass, including home minister Amit Shah and party president J P Nadda.
Reddy’s party has been steadfast in its support to Modi govt in Parliament, especially in RS where NDA doesn’t have a majority of its own and helped govt tide over difficult situations. BJP circles were tight-lipped whether the likely political realignment in the state figured in the discussion.
BJP sources have maintained that the party has cordial ties with YSRCP, acknowledging its support on key legislations in RS. However, they cite “ideological differences” with YSRCP and its old ties with TDP, which was part of NDA, to explain why it has opened negotiations with Naidu.
