PATNA: A senior BJP district functionary in Bihar died on Thursday of injuries allegedly inflicted by police during a lathicharge on protesters mobilised by the saffron party at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan against the Nitish Kumar government’s teacher recruitment policy and other issues.
Vijay Kumar Singh, general secretary of BJP’s Jehanabad unit, was wheeled into Patna Medical College unconscious, hospital superintendent Dr Indus Shekhar Thakur said. “He was put on a ventilator, but could not be saved. We are awaiting the post-mortem report to know the cause of his death. No external injury mark was found on the body.”
BJP’s Maharajganj MP Janardan Singh Sigriwal, who was a minister in the erstwhile NDA government in the state, was among 30-odd people wounded in the police crackdown on protesters, sources said.
While BJP blamed the police lathicharge for Vijay Singh’s death, the district administration issued a rebuttal stating that the latter was “found unconscious by the roadside”.
The Patna administration had set up barricades at the Dak Bungalow crossing leading to Gandi Maidan to prevent BJP’s protest march. The lathicharge apparently started after the protesters tried to break the barricade to reach the central point of the crossing.
“Vijay Singh, who fell unconscious, was first taken to a private nursing home, from where the doctors referred him to PMCH for better treatment. He succumbed to grievous injuries suffered in the lathicharge,” BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sushil Kumar Modi tweeted.
Patna SSP Rajiv Mishra said there were contrasting accounts of how things panned out. “Vijay Singh’s friend Bharat Bhushan Chandravanshi, also from Jehanabad, has told police that the former fell on the ground during a scuffle between the policemen and protesters.”
Union minister and former state BJP president Nityanand Rai, who met the deceased party member’s family, alleged that the administration was trying to hide the circumstances leading to his colleague’s death.
