Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan accused the Centre of taking “unconstitutional steps” to strangle the state’s finances by fixing borrowing limits, while remaining optimistic about the possibility of the opposition INDIA bloc unseating BJP in the LS polls.
He made these remarks in an interview with TOI’s Jaikrishnan Nair, speaking in his specially designed bus that wound its way through the interiors of Alappuzha district as part of LDF government’s Nava Kerala Sadas public outreach programme, where the cabinet travels through all 14 districts and 140 assembly constituencies.The programme, viewed as a political move ahead of the LS polls, has encountered protests from opposition parties. Questioned about the programme’s nature, he said: “The yatra is being organised to present issues faced by Kerala before the people. The Centre is deliberately disrupting the state’s progress. This is being presented and explained to people.”

Asked about the INDIA bloc’s chances in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, given BJP’s sweep in three Hindi heartland states in recent elections, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan expressed optimism.
“The fate of BJP has already been decided. BJP cannot survive in this country. But Congress should take a stand considering the situation in each state and work towards unity,” he told TOI in an interview.
On the ongoing spat with the governor, Vijayan accused Congress of aligning with BJP on such matters. “It is very clear that the central government is behind the acts of the governor.”
About left-wing student organisation SFI‘s stand on the governor, the chief minister said: “I cannot say anything… I wave back at those who show black flags at me. It is part of a democratic process. The governor lacks a democratic mind.”
Vijayan expressed concern over the “deliberate disruption” of Kerala’s progress by the Centre. He criticised the BJP-led central government for “exerting control” beyond its entitlements, citing issues like fixing borrowing limits, which he labelled as illegal and anti-constitutional.
“It is not about borrowing alone, but also regarding our entitled share in taxes etc. This is done to halt the progress of the state… Kerala should stand united when we demand that the Centre correct its stand. UDF should also correct its stand… and Congress should take initiatives for that,” he said.
Regarding the reported exodus of Kerala students for higher studies abroad, the CM emphasised that there should be no apprehensions about pursuing education in foreign countries, although there are some issues with substandard institutions.
“Those who go to such institutions may get cheated,” he said, while calling for a system to examine such matters and assuring the state government’s commitment to exploring solutions.
