HYDERABAD: At least 100 passengers of Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express had a miraculous escape on Friday morning after fire engulfed five bogies of the train near Pagidipalli village in Telangana’s Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district, 45km off Hyderabad.
Three sleeper coaches were reduced to cinders, while two adjacent bogies were partially wrecked in the devastating fire.
As sparks were noticed near the roof around 11:20am, passengers pulled the chain. An SOS was sent to the nearby Bhongir fire station, and passengers were quickly evacuated from the burning bogies. No loss of life or injury was reported.
Eight firefighting vehicles were rushed to the site, but three coaches – S4, S5 and S6 – were gutted by the time they started the operation. “Firefighting kicked off after 30 minutes, awaiting snapping of overhead power supply. By then, the flames had spread to adjacent compartments,” a fire department official said.
It took the firefighters more than two hours to douse the blaze. Three rear bogies (S7, S8 and S9) were detached along with the gutted compartments after the fire-fighting operation got over.
Police, Railway Protection Force, railway police and Yadadri Disaster Response Force teams also joined the rescue operation, said DGP Anjani Kumar. Officials are yet to ascertain the cause of fire, but passengers said they detected smoke emanating from the alarm chain that billowed through the roof.
