NEW DELHI: Congress on Tuesday formed a committee for alliances for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, setting in motion the process for identifying allies and carrying out seat-sharing in states with INDIA partners.
The panel comprises Congress veterans Ashok Gehlot, Bhupesh Baghel, Salman Khurshid and Mohan Prakash, with senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP Mukul Wasnik as its convenor.
The panel fills a major gap that has been the roadblock in the INDIA alliance talks, with regional parties slamming Congress for not heeding their demands for early clinching of the seat-sharing deals. In the past couple of months, the allies have publicly berated Congress for focusing all its energies in the just-concluded assembly elections to five states, ignoring their entreaties that apportioning seats among allies should be completed at the earliest to facilitate early candidate selection and campaign strategy to take on the BJP in 2024.
The announcement came barely minutes ahead of the meeting of the INDIA alliance in the capital on Tuesday that resumed the stalled process of finalising the programme and strategy for the bloc, which has come together to challenge BJP in the parliamentary polls.
