In a surprising turn of events, senior Congress leader Milind Deora has resigned from the party just before the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The Congress has alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a hand in the timing of Deora’s departure.
According to Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, Deora had reached out to him on Friday expressing concerns about the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena staking a claim to the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, a constituency that both Deora and his father, Murli Deora, had previously represented.
Ramesh shared their conversation, stating, “He messaged me on Friday at 8:52 AM and then at 2:47 PM I replied, ‘Are you planning a switch?’ At 2:48, he sent a message saying, ‘Is speaking to you not possible?’ I said I will call you, and at 3:40, I spoke to him.”Ramesh further explained, “He (Deora) said he is concerned that it is a sitting Shiv Sena seat. He wanted to meet Rahul Gandhi and explain the situation to him, and he also wanted me to talk to Mr. Gandhi about it.” Ramesh accused Deora of planning to leave the party all along, alleging that the timing of his announcement was influenced by the Prime Minister.
Expressing his fondness for Milind Deora’s father, Murli Deora, Ramesh mentioned their long association. He stated, “He (Murli Deora) had close friends in all political parties but was a stalwart Congressman who always stood by the Congress party – through thick and thin. Tathastu!”
Milind Deora, a former Union minister and the ex-MP of South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat, confirmed his resignation from the primary membership of the party in a social media post. He wrote, “Today marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in my political journey. I have tendered my resignation from the primary membership of the Congress, ending my family’s 55-year relationship with the party. I am grateful to all leaders, colleagues, and karyakartas for their unwavering support over the years.”
Deora, who was recently appointed as the joint treasurer of the All India Congress Committee, had previously expressed disapproval of the Shiv Sena’s claim to the South Mumbai Lok Sabha seat.
