JAMMU: Families of seven civilians killed in a terror attack in Dangri village of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district this January staged a protest and blocked the Jammu-Poonch national highway on Monday morning demanding justice.
Terrorists had struck Dangri village on January 1 and opened fire at villagers, killing five innocent civilians. While fleeing, the terrorists left behind an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that killed two minors the next morning. As many as 14 villagers were injured in the twin attacks.
Holding pictures of the seven victims, a large crowd of protestors marched from Dangri village and blocked the busy highway near Rajouri’s Muradpur area on Monday. The agitators sought identification and arrest of the culprits without further delay, and even burnt tyres on the road to disrupt traffic amid sloganeering.
Saroj Bala, whose two sons — Deepak (23) and Prince (36) — were killed in the attack, said she has been waiting for justice for the past six months. “We have been hearing that the case has almost been solved, but there is no trace of the terrorists involved in the attack. The terrorist supporters, who facilitated the attack, are also yet to be identified,” she said.
A distraught Priyanka Sharma, who lost her four-year-old son Vihan in the attack, asked: “What was his fault? He was so small to justify even a friend or foe!”
On May 6, the Army killed a terrorist in the forested Kandi area of Rajouri, whom locals identified as one of the perpetrators involved in the Dangri attack. They, however, questioned why none of the sympathisers who had harboured the attackers had been arrested so far.
“They (authorities) say 80% of the case has been solved. So why don’t they share that 80% with us?” Saroj questioned. “Six months have passed since the attack, but no solid action has been taken till date,” she rued, adding: “I simply want justice for my children.”
Saroj had addressed a press conference in Jammu on June 5, saying she would even go to Delhi to seek justice. After the death of her sons, she is the lone surviving member of the family as her husband had died sometime back due to illness.
Senior administrative and police officials rushed to the scene and held multiple rounds of talk with the protestors to pacify them. After officials’ assurance that the investigation was proceeding at full pace, the protest was called off around 4.30pm and traffic was restored after seven hours on the highway.
