NEW DELHI: Leaders attending the G20 Summit will be treated to a three-hour musical extravaganza showcasing India’s rich musical traditions at the President’s dinner on September 9.
The ‘Bharat Vadya Darshanam (India’s instrumental journey)’, performed by the ‘Gaandharva Aatodyam’ group, has been curated by the Sangeet Natak Akademi. It will see 78 instrumentalists from across India perform together using 34 Hindustani instruments, 18 Carnatic instruments, and 40 folk instruments.
The programme will also showcase some rare instruments such as Surbahar, Jaltarang, Naltarang, Vichitra Veena, Rudra Veena, Saraswati Veena, Dhangli, Sundri, Bhapang and Dilruba.
Sandhya Purecha, chairman of the Sangeet Naatak Akademi, said musicians will be grouped on the basis of the instrument type and each will perform one at a time, with the entire ensemble exemplifying India’s musical diversity.
The artists, who have been practising since August 31 will play the G20 theme song under the Indian Presidency — ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
The President’s dinner at the G20 summit will end with the 1988 classic ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara’, a song that was first aired on Doordarshan on Independence Day in 1988, promoting national integration. Composed by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the concept of the song was originally developed by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad and promoted by Doordarshan and the ministry of information and broadcasting.
