NEW DELHI: Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, who is in Colombia to attend an event of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB), on Wednesday suggested that election management bodies (EMBs) from different countries join hands to counter challenges like fake narratives which are trying to derail election integrity worldwide.
Kumar — during discussions at the 11th meeting of executive board of A-WEB, an association of 119 EMBs from around the world, at Cartagena, Colombia — proposed the setting up of an A-WEB portal to serve as a repository of electoral best practices and initiatives taken by member EMBs in various aspects of electoral management. He also mooted instituting of A-WEB Global Awards to honour EMBs that have made significant contribution and important interventions in democratic processes.
Both the proposals were approved by the A-WEB executive board, an Election Commission of India spokesperson shared on Wednesday.
Kumar told the participants that A-WEB, as the world’s largest association of EMBs, plays a critical role in fostering cooperation amongst EMBs and enabling learning from each other’s experiences and best practices. He stressed that EMBs through forums like AWEB could work together on pressing challenges like fighting fake narratives that have been threatening election integrity across the globe.
Fake news and deep fakes have been among the EC’s prime concerns, with Kumar having repeatedly called upon social media platforms to use their ‘algorithm power’ to proactively red-flag fake news.
During the deliberations at the executive board meeting, the participants discussed various agenda items, including the programmes and activities to be undertaken by A-WEB during 2023-24, annual progress report of A-WEB and its regional offices including A-WEB India Centre, budget and membership related matters among others.
On the sidelines of the 11th A-WEB Executive Board meeting, a bilateral meeting was also held with the National Election Commission of the Republic of Korea on EC’s electronic postal ballot system.
India and South Korea had signed an MoU in 2012 for establishing a mutually cooperative relationship in the field of election administration.
