Tech giants including Alphabet’s Google, Facebook parent Meta and Qualcomm have teamed up to push for open digital ecosystems. The group was formed in response to new tech rules by the European Commission that make it mandatory for companies to offer users a choice to use the apps and platforms of their liking.
The group, called Coalition for Open Digital Ecosystems (CODE), said it wants to promote more open platforms and systems to boost growth and innovation in Europe.The move may also take the edge of possible future legislation, news agency Reuters reported.
How this group will work
The group said it will work with academics, policymakers and companies on digital openness and how this can be achieved in Europe “through the implementation of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) and in future EU regulatory framework developments”.
The DMA requires companies that have been tagged gatekeepers to allow apps and platforms from their rivals to inter-operate with their services.
As per the new EU law, services offered by Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon and TikTok parent company ByteDance.
Which companies are members of the coalition
Apart from Google and Meta, tech giants including Qualcomm, Honor, Lenovo, US telecoms equipment maker Motorola, London-based consumer electronic company Nothing, Norwegian tech company Opera, French augmented reality start-up Lynx and German messaging services provider Wire.
“We have had a number of conversations in the past few months about what ‘good’ looks like when it comes to digital ecosystems in Europe, what fosters innovation, and what will positively impact competitiveness. We think openness is the crucial element,” Lynx founder Stan Larroque was quoted as saying.
