“The PM said that CMs of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Manipur should take care of the law and order. Now tell me, where is Manipur (in ethnic violence) and where is Rajasthan? Gehlot asked, referring to Modi’s remarks two days ago after videos of the Manipur strip-and-parade horror on May 4 went viral.
The CM refused comment on his decision Friday to sack minister Rajendra Gudha after his damning statements in the assembly, saying it was an “internal matter of the party”. Gudha had said the Rajasthan government “had failed to ensure the security of women” and that “we should introspect on this instead of focusing on Manipur”.
Gehlot said the PM always talks about “140 crore Indians but his inaction and silence on Manipur has put 140 crore Indians to shame”. “For 77 days, the PM did not utter a word. As soon as the Supreme Court order (asking the government for a report on the violence) came, he spoke for a few seconds but played politics there also by comparing Manipur with Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh,” Gehlot said, adding the statements had hurt the self-respect of the people of Rajasthan.
Gehlot suggested that Modi should hold a meeting to review the situation in Manipur and said it would be hard to “imagine what all he would have said if Congress had been in power in the state instead of BJP”. He brushed off BJP’s allegations over law and order and paper leaks in Rajasthan, saying, “They are lying, spoiling the atmosphere and defaming the government.” The state goes to polls later this year.
