Apple made its first-ever mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, available for a handful of users in the US at the beginning of the month. The limited release of the AR/VR headset is fueling a resale market. According to a report by Bloomberg News, resellers outside the US are pricing the device much higher than its $3,500 official starting price.

Resellers outside US asking higher prices for Vision Pro

The report claims that the Vision Pro’s base 256GB model sold for 800,000 yen ($5,400) at Japan’s Mercari marketplace. On the other hand, sellers of China’s Taobao are asking 36,000 yuan ($5,000). Meanwhile, one seller on Singapore’s Lazada was seeking 8,500 Singapore dollars ($6,300) for the device.
In Hong Kong’s Mong Kok, an electronics importer specialising in getting gadgets early asked for 35,800 Hong Kong dollars ($4,580), with the price changing on a daily basis. This importer has also advised customers to wait for the prices to come down. The Vision Pro headset has an elaborate setup and customisation process for each buyer. With this procedure, the company wants to ensure an optimal first experience with its virtual reality goggles — which it dubs a spatial computer. The device also supports hand gestures that can be used to control it.

What analysts have to say about Vision Pro’s prices

The official pricing of the Vision Pro raises questions about how big the consumer market is for the extended reality (XR) devices. However, the device’s early exclusivity may be pushing up the resale prices.
The report cited Counterpoint Research analyst Ivan Lam saying: “Our observations indicate inflated prices on unofficial channels, reaching up to 40,000 yuan for Vision Pro units. However, these purchases likely represent a limited supply, originating from outside markets and deviating from typical consumer behaviour.”
IDC analyst Bryan Ma also said that the drive to acquire an early unit of the new device comes from various sources. Apart from dedicated Apple fans, overseas software developers as well as industry players and rivals are also trying to get hands-on experience quickly to figure out their next steps, Ma noted.
