RAIPUR: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday announced a scheme to provide free education for everyone – “from KG to PG”, as he described it – in government-run educational institutions in Chhattisgarh.
Rahul, who was addressing an election rally in Kondagaon in Bastar, said that the Congress government would offer education free of cost in Hindi, English, and the local language of the respective state, Chhattisgarhi in this case.
The Lok Sabha MP also pledged to increase the price of tendu leaves procured from tribal communities to Rs 4,000 per standard bag (from Rs 2,500) and raise the minimum support price of other minor forest produce by Rs 10 if the Congress retained power in next month’s assembly elections. Tendu leaves, dried and used to wrap beedis, are collected by tribals from the forest and are the major source of income from forest produce.Rahul pointed out the difference in what some BJP leaders preach and practice, saying that they push for solely Hindi medium of education, but send their children to attend English-language schools.
Rahul reiterated his commitment to conduct a caste survey and make its findings public to accurately determine the number of OBCs and other communities so that they can be given their rightful due. He accused the Modi government of misleading OBCs and highlighted their low participation in the budget and other administrative aspects, despite constituting approximately 50% of the population.
Referring to the differences in terminology used by the Congress and the BJP to describe tribal communities, he explained that the Congress calls them ‘Adivasis’, signifying their original connection to the land and their rights to the water, forest, and land.
In contrast, the BJP refers to them as ‘Vanvasis’, which simply means people who reside in the forests and lack these rights. Rahul stressed that using the term ‘Vanvasi’ is not only an insult to tribal communities but also an attack on their culture, history, and rights.
