NEW DELHI: Authorities in Bali, the Indonesian resort island, are actively searching for a foreign national who was captured in a viral video meditating naked at a Hindu shrine. The island, renowned for its palm-fringed beauty, has pledged to crack down on misbehaving tourists following a series of incidents that have disrespected the island’s predominantly Hindu culture.
This particular incident garnered widespread attention after Balinese influencer Ni Luh Djelantik reposted the video multiple times over the weekend, drawing hundreds of thousands of views. “We are currently conducting investigations regarding this incident,” stated Immigration Office head Tedy Riyandi in a statement sent to AFP on Tuesday.
While authorities have identified the foreign national, they have not disclosed his name or nationality as the search continues. “The Immigration Office is attempting to contact the foreigner through his social media account, but there has been no response so far,” Riyandi said. He added that the search efforts were being coordinated with Bali police, with ongoing attempts to determine the exact location and time of the incident.
According to a report in the Daily Mail, an influencer, Ni Luh Djelantik, has hit back at claims that he meditated naked in front of the temple. “So when others say I am meditating naked at a holy site, I want to let you know that they are wrong. I am actually meditating naked on MY OWN GOD DAMN LAND,” the Daily Mail said.
Bali, heavily reliant on tourism, attracts millions of foreign visitors annually. However, since the island’s reopening after the Covid-19 pandemic, several high-profile cases have led to the deportation of tourists engaging in inappropriate behavior.
In June, a Danish woman was deported after a video showed her flashing the public while riding a motorbike, and in April, a Russian woman was expelled for posting a nude photo in front of a sacred tree. To address such incidents, the local government published a guide for tourists visiting Bali, responding to the concerns raised by the island’s immigration office.
