MUMBAI: Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal miffed some Congress politicians with his surprise entry at the INDIA alliance meeting on Friday.
Sibal, who had been a vocal member of the dissident G-23 group in the Congress, snapped ties with the party in 2022.
Sibal filed his Rajya Sabha nomination as an “independent” candidate with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav by his side in Lucknow. It was surmised that Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and NCP leader Sharad Pawar might have invited Sibal, who was not on the original invitee list.
Some said Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference and Yadav intervened to invite Sibal. The MP was eventually accommodated in the group photographs featuring the leaders of the INDIA alliance.
K C Venugopal was learnt to have expressed unhappiness over Sibal’s presence to Thackeray, the alliance meeting host. Sibal was welcomed by NCP MP Supriya Sule.
He spoke to Thackeray and Pawar, among others. Sibal represented the Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Supreme Court in its case against the Shiv Sena led by Eknath Shinde.
