BeEHRAMPORE: Trinamool’s Murshidabad unit general secretary was shot dead at the entrance of his apartment building in Behrampore on Sunday morning.
Three unidentified bike-borne persons had come outside the apartment building of Satyen Chowdhury, 65, in the morning. Police believe that at least one of the assailants was known to Chowdhury. “We are probing whether Chowdhury had a political or business rivalry with someone,” said a police officer.
Locals said the assailants sped away after shooting the TMC leader. Chowdhury’s relatives claimed they took with them his two cellphones. No arrests had been made till reports last came in. Murshidabad SP Surya Pratap Yadav said: “We are checking CCTV footage. Adjacent police stations have been alerted.”
Chowdhury was a close aide of Behrampore MP Adhir Chowdhury more than a decade ago when he was a Congress panchayat samiti member. He quit Congress to join TMC in 2012.
Trinamool MLA Humayun Kabir said: “He had apprehended a threat to his life a month back and requested police security. I suspect personal enmity is behind this murder.”
