CHENNAI: The sole AIADMK MP in the Lok Sabha, O P Ravindranath, lost his post on Thursday when Madras high court declared his election from Theni constituency null and void for his failure to disclose assets and liabilities, false affidavit and improper acceptance of his nomination papers, reports Sureshkumar K.
The HC, however, suspended the operation of the order for 30 days to enable Ravindranath, who is the son of former Tamil Nadu CM O Panneerselvam, to file an appeal.
The court order came following an election petition filed by a Theni voter and lawyer P Milany, who challenged Ravindranath’s election alleging distribution of money to voters by his associates.
“This court holds that the returned candidate has suppressed his assets. This court holds that the nomination of the returned candidate had been improperly accepted…this court has to allow the election petition and declare the election of Ravindranath as void,” said Justice S S Sunder.
Interestingly, Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan, who lost to Ravindranath in 2019, is now an MLA representing the Erode East constituency that fell vacant after the death of his son Thirumagan Evera.
