MADURAI: The Madras high court dismissed on Wednesday the bail plea of Enforcement Directorate (ED) officer Ankit Tiwari, who was arrested by Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) sleuths for allegedly taking a bribe from a doctor in Dindigul district.
DVAC booked Tiwari for offences under Section 7 (a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act based on the complaint of Dr T Suresh Babu, chief civil surgeon, Dindigul government medical college hospital.According to the prosecution, Tiwari initially demanded Rs 3 crore for not taking action against the complaint pending against Babu.
Subsequently, he cut the bribe amount to Rs 51 lakh and received Rs 20 lakh from Babu on November 1, the prosecution claims. Tiwari was arrested on December 1 after a trap was set for him by the DVAC.
In his petition, Tiwari said he has not committed the alleged offence and that there is no case pending against complainant Suresh Babu in the ED’s file. Claiming that there is no logical reason for him to demand a bribe from the complainant, Tiwari sought bail saying it was a foisted case.
