NAGPUR: Drawing parallels with the now-repealed three farm laws, former chief minister and Karad MLA Prithviraj Chavan said prime minister Narendra Modi and entire BJP leaders were taking revenge against farmers for the year long protest in 2020. He asked Maharasthra farmers to emulate North India farmer and unitedly fight the recent ban on onion export.
“Remember the huge outcry and protests over the three farms laws implemented by the central government.Ultimately, the farmers made Narendra Modi bite the dust and he was forced to rollback the laws. For this, entire BJP and Narendra Modi are taking revenge against farmers and agri-economy,” said Chavan outside Vidhan Bhavan on Monday.
“The central government has banned exports of sugar, wheat, rice, imposed 40% export duty on onion for the first time, banned ethanol production from sugarcane. On the other side, union minister Nitin Gadkari says 20% ethanol must be mixed in petrol, but Modi government is just banning, banning and banning everything. Instead of ensuring how farmers earn more, Narendra Modi government is working on how it can cause damage to farmers,” he said.
Chavan said even if onion is being grown in one part of Maharashtra, all farmers of the state must back onion growers. “The cruel decision of banning exports has taken away the hopes of earning some money from farmers. Just like the way farmers unitedly fought the three farm laws, Maharashtra farmers need launch a massive protest against the government,” he said
“It doesn’t make a difference if Devendra Fadnavis meets Piyush Goyal. The Centre is not in a mood to listen to them. Whether farmer dies or commits suicide, Modi government is not concerned,” he said.
Chanvan said there is no insurance payout, no farm loan waiver, no panchnama, no financial assistance after unseasonal rains to farmers. “Drought in several parts is so severe that there is a need to set up livestock shelters, send water tankers. But the government is not paying attention to these issues. A big agitation is going on over Maratha quota. The agitation must be stopped immediately after finding a solution to their issues. The BJP leadership is trying to create rift between communities. An unstable situation has been created and its consequences investments are not coming to the state. There is no employment for youths,” he said.
