“Namaste from Bharat! Our fullest support to this UNGA’s theme of rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity. This is an occasion to take stock of our achievements and challenges even while sharing our aspirations and goals. Indeed, in regard to both, there is much that India has to share,” Jaishankar said at the UNGA session.
This is not the first time that “Bharat” has taken precedence over India in the recent times. Prime Minister had opened the mega G20 summit sitting behind a nameplate that read “Bharat” and not India.

The government, in fact, seems to be favouring international events to promote ‘Bharat’. While its intent was amplified when President Droupadi Murmu’s dinner invite to G20 delegates introduced her as the ‘President of Bharat’, it turned out that the government had used ‘Prime Minister of Bharat’ as Modi’s job title during the Johannesburg meet of Brics countries.
The same description was used again when the PM visited Indonesia for the East Asia summit.
‘Bharat’ has also been used in a G20 booklet meant for foreign delegates, titled ‘Bharat, The Mother Of Democracy’, which said, “Bharat is the official name of the country. It is mentioned in the Constitution as also in the reports of the Constituent Assembly.”
Badges worn by officials read ‘Bharat Official’.
The opposition parties claim that PM Modi had started using “Bharat” as country’s name in his speeches ever since they decided to name their new anti-BJP alliance as INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance). The use of name INDIA by the opposition parties came under fierce attack by the government with PM Modi himself leading the attack.
The Prime Minister cited the use of name India by terror organisations like the Popular Front of India to denounce the opposition move. In subsequent speeches by PM Modi, there was a conscious use of “Bharat” instead to India to refer to the country.
