NEW DELHI: Two senior members of the Modi government on Wednesday denounced NCP chief Sharad Pawar for criticising the Prime Minister’s statement calling Hamas’s attack on Israel as a terror strike, deepening the contrast between BJP and members of the opposition INDIA block on the ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.
“I strongly deplore the irresponsible statement made by Sharad Pawar, in which he questioned PM Narendra Modi’s unequivocal condemnation of the recent terror attack in Israel. India has consistently stood against all forms of terrorism, both domestically and internationally. PM Modi strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Israel is a reflection of our unwavering commitment to global peace and security,” Nitin Gadkari said in a series of posts on X.
This marked a rare instance of Gadkari, who has ties across the spectrum, publicly taking on a senior opposition leader, that too a fellow Maharashtrian, and brought out in the open yet another sharp divide between BJP and opposition parties over Hamas’s terror attack on civilians.
“National security is a paramount concern, and there should be unity and consensus when it comes to safeguarding the well-being of our nation,” Gadkari said. “The gravity of the situation necessitates a unified front against terrorism, irrespective of political affiliations or personal opinions,” he added, emphasising that veteran politicians like Pawar are expected to appreciate PM Modi’s stand in the light of India’s own security challenges rather than being swayed by partisan considerations.
Piyush Goyal was even sharper in his attack on Pawar, calling the veteran leader’s statement as reflective of a “rotten mindset”.
“It is very disturbing when a senior leader like Sharad Pawar makes preposterous statements on India’s stand on a terror attack in Israel,” said Goyal in a post in response to Pawar’s statement last Sunday, in which he said it was unfortunate that PM Modi had stood with Israel unlike his predecessors who always stood with Palestine.
The BJP leader said that the menace of terrorism has to be condemned in all forms, in any part of the world.
“It is a pity that a person who has been India’s defence minister as well as a chief minister many times has such a casual view on issues relating to terror,” Goyal said, also referring to the constitutional positions Pawar had held in the past.
Goyal said that Pawar was a part of the same government that shed tears on the Batla House encounter and slept while there were terror attacks on Indian soil. “This rotten mindset has to stop. I hope Pawar at least now, thinks of the nation first,” Goyal said.
Addressing in Mumbai, Pawar had said, “It is very unfortunate that for the first time, our Prime Minister stood with Israel, leaving the real issue over there. He neglected the real issue. We should be clear about our stand. The stand of the NCP should be clear. We stand by the people who originally belonged to that land.”
