In the capital city of Abu Dhabi, a distressing incident has come to light involving over 140 cats abandoned in a remote desert area, CNN reported.
Cats of all breeds, including non-native varieties were left to die trapped in their carriers or have been wandering the desert without food, shelter or water, the report said quoting Chiku Shergill, an Abu Dhabi resident who took part in the rescue effort.
The abandonment happened in the government-operated Abu Dhabi Animal Shelter in al Falah, a residential district in the city.
In response to this act of cruelty, the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has stepped forward, offering a reward of $5,000 for any information leading to the identification of the individuals responsible for abandoning these cats in the desert, CNN reported quoting Jason Baker, Vice-President of PETA Asia.
Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has pledged to launch an investigation into this distressing incident. They are actively encouraging the public to provide any pertinent details about the event and are diligently working to identify and hold accountable those responsible for this heart-wrenching act of abandonment, the report added.
