BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta on Thursday launched an investigation into the collapse and damage of six of the seven Saptarishi idols at the Mahakal Lok corridor in Ujjain on May 28 even as a political storm rages over the incident.
Among the points of investigation is whether there was corruption and when it was decided to use fiberglass fibre-reinforced plastic for the idols.
A team from the Lokayukta will visit the site on Saturday. This is the third case related to Mahakal Lok corridor being investigated by the Lokayukta organization.
According to sources, Lokayukta Justice N K Gupta has taken suo motu cognizance of reports regarding the incident. Several devotees were present when the idols toppled; fortunately, no injuries were reported. Officials have attributed the incident to gusty winds.
The Mahakal Lok corridor, estimated at Rs 419 crore, is part of the first phase of the Rs 850-crore Mahakaleshwar Temple Corridor Development Project. The opposition Congress has hit out at BJP government, alleging corruption in the project and demanding an investigation into the “sub-standard” construction.
