JAIPUR: Rajasthan government has put on hold free distribution of 1.33 crore phones to women under the Mukhyamantri Digital Seva Yojana till the scheme’s benefits are examined. This ambitious scheme of the Gehlot government was announced in 2022 and distribution had started in Aug 2023.
Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, minister of DoIT, said in response to a question in Assembly that 24,56,001 women had been given internet data with phones till Oct 9, 2023. MLA Bamanwas Indra Meena’s query was, “How many phones were distributed under the scheme? Is the government willing to continue the scheme?”
A response on Assembly website stated, “The future decision on the scheme will be taken after examining the benefits of this scheme to women and the public interest”. It further stated that the smartphone distribution work was stopped due to the code of conduct. Though the scheme’s target was to provide smartphones to 1.33 crore women, it was modified in the 2023-24 budget, it stated. The target of providing smartphones to 40 lakh beneficiaries was set with a budgetary allocation of Rs 1,600 crores in the first phase.
