LUCKNOW: Even as seven BJP candidates filed their nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections on Wednesday, suspense grew around the possibility of the party fielding an eighth contender on the last day of nomination on Thursday – a move that could necessitate polling for the Upper House on Feb 27.
BJP’s seven candidates – RPN Singh, Sudhanshu Trivedi, Chaudhary Tejveer Singh, Sadhana Singh, Sangeeta Balwant, Amarpal Maurya and Navin Jain – filed their nominations in the presence of CM Yogi Adityanath, party national vice-president and UP election in-charge Baijayant Panda, UP BJP chief Bhupendra Chaudhary and other senior leaders.
Samajwadi Party has fielded three candidates – Jaya Bachchan, Ramji Lal Suman and Alok Ranjan – and is hopeful they will get elected unopposed.
At present, UP Assembly has 399 MLAs, which means that each candidate will need the support of at least 37 MLAs to sail through. BJP-led NDA has a strength of 277 legislators, which means it can easily send seven nominees with 18 votes to spare.
SP, which has 108 MLAs, can get three candidates elected, but the third one will fall short of two votes. This gap can be bridged with the help of two MLAs of Congress. BSP’s lone MLA Uma Shankar Singh has not clarified his stand though there are signs that he may abstain from voting.
At the same time, BJP’s strength in the Assembly is expected to grow further with RLD inclining towards it. Likewise, Jansatta Dal Loktantrik of Raja Bhaiya, which has two MLAs, has also been siding with the BJP. This way, NDA will have 29 spare votes and would require another eight votes to trump the SP-Congress combine on the 10th seat.
Given this arithmetic, all eyes will be on the possibility of cross voting in the Assembly, which could intensify the face-off between the BJP and the SP ahead of Lok Sabha elections.
SP camp is already feeling a spell of turbulence with Apna Dal (Kamerwadi) leader and Sirathu MLA on SP ticket, Pallavi Patel, showing signs of defiance. Patel, who is the sister of Apna Dal (S) chief and Union minister Anupriya Patel has questioned the absence of PDA (pichra, Dalit and alpsankhyak) among the Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha nominees.
Earlier in the day, BJP’s seven candidates were greeted at the state party office amid presence of senior party leaders, including deputy CMs Keshav Maurya and Brajesh Pathak. Speaking to reporters, Baijayant Panda said BJPs’ strength has been growing under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. “So is the case with UP where the ‘double-engine’ government is working under leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath,” he said.
