CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has granted another 30-day parole to jailed Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is serving sentences in two rape cases and life imprisonment in two separate murder cases. This marks his fifth parole in 17 months, and the second this year.
His parole history includes previous releases for 21 days in February 2022, 30 days in June 2022, 40 days in October 2022, and 40 days in January this year. After his conviction in two rape cases in August 2017, he was released from “sunrise to sunset” on October 24, 2020 to meet his ailing mother at a Gurgaon hospital.
The Haryana government has consistently defended the furlough to the chief of the influential Sirsa-based Dera, citing that it falls within his legal rights as a convict. According to the jail manual, a convict (sentenced to more than 10 years) is entitled to 98 days of parole in a year, and the period spent outside of jail is added to the sentence without reducing the overall sentence.
Despite such privileges, parole eligibility is not granted to all jail inmates and depends on various factors, including the discretion of authorities and administrative clearance.
The Dera chief, currently incarcerated in Rohtak’s Sunaria jail, has been granted parole on the condition that he remains present at the Shah Satnam Ji Ashram Dera Sacha Sauda Barnava in Uttar Pradesh’s Bagpat district and obtains prior permission from the district magistrate (DM) before leaving. The decision was made after the Bagpat DM provided clearance in his report dated July 18.
The order issued by the Rohtak division commissioner states that the Dera chief is entitled to be released under the Haryana Good Conduct Prisoners (Temporary Release) Act, 2022, based on reports from the Rohtak jail superintendent, the DM and the SP of Bagpat. He has been asked to furnish a personal bond and two sureties of Rs 3 lakh each to the satisfaction of the DM to ensure faithful observance of the specified parole conditions.
However, the parole decision has drawn concern from Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Harjinder Singh Dhami. They expressed their disapproval, questioning the repeated parole grants to the Dera chief while Sikh prisoners were being denied any form of release by the government. Dhami highlighted the distrustful environment this policy was creating among the Sikh community.
