BENGALURU: Professor Urbasi Sinha, a faculty member at the Quantum Information and Computing (QuIC) laboratory at Raman Research Institute (RRI) in Bengaluru, has been appointed as the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Photonic Quantum Science and Technologies.
This is the first time an Indian scientisthas received this esteemed accolade from the Government of Canada, RRI said in a release, adding that over the next eight years, Prof Sinha will receive an $8 million grant, fostering international collaborations in academia, industry, and other sectors.This substantial support aims to develop innovative lab-to-market models, propelling advancements inquantum technologies.
Prof. Sinha specialises in pioneering research areas such as quantum communication, computation, optics, and fundamentals. Her laboratory has played a pivotal role in advancing secure quantum communications using satellites.
She is among 34 global scientists whose selection for the latest CERC was announced recently and her selection comes after a rigorous international peer-review process, emphasising her significant contributions to the field, the release read.
“I’ve always believed that science is global and that it is through international as well as national alliances and collaborations we can achieve more than what we would do working in silos. The CERC gives me an opportunity to put these words to action. Not only does it allow me to expand our activities to a different country and environment, it also provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to contribute towards quantum ecosystem development in India and Canada in parallel,” Prof Sinha said.
Presently affiliated with prestigious institutions in Canada, including the Institute for Quantum Computing and the University of Toronto, Prof Sinha’s recognition underscores India’s growing prominence in quantum science.
RRI director Prof Tarun Souradeep, said: “RRI applauds Prof Sinha on this well-deserved global recognition for the path breaking research carried out by her group at the institute over the past decade. This is a reassuring marker that the venerable Institute continues on its path of scientific excellence. This also vindicates the institute’s trademark trait of foresight in identifying frontier research areas and providing unfettered support to the young researchers.”
Former Isro chairman AS Kiran Kumar, also the chair of RRI governing council, congratulated Sinha, highlighting the global impact of her work.
