NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) commented on former Congress president Sonia Gandhi‘s decision to contest the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls from Rajasthan, stating that it signifies an acknowledgment of an anticipated defeat in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination papers in Jaipur for the Rajya Sabha elections, with the presence of her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot, PCC chief Govind Singh Dotasra, and Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully.
Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP IT department, expressed his views on the development through a post on X, stating, “After Congress’ crushing defeat in Amethi, Rae Bareli was next. Sonia Gandhi’s decision to opt for Rajya Sabha is an admission of a looming defeat.”
Malviya further pointed out that the Gandhis have moved away from their supposed strongholds, with Sonia Gandhi choosing the Rajya Sabha route instead of contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Rae Bareli, a traditional family bastion.
Predicting the Congress’s performance in Uttar Pradesh, Malviya asserted, “The Congress will draw a blank in UP, despite 11 seats offered by the SP (Samajwadi Party).”
The Congress is expected to secure one of the three Rajya Sabha seats from Rajasthan, with the election becoming necessary as former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s six-year tenure comes to an end in April.
Sonia Gandhi, after five terms as a Lok Sabha MP, will embark on her first term in the Upper House. The 77-year-old, who represented Rae Bareli, had announced in 2019 that it would be her last Lok Sabha election. Her nomination marks the second instance of a member from the Gandhi family entering the Rajya Sabha, following former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s tenure from August 1964 to February 1967.
