NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah mocked those who welcomed the Supreme Court’s order cutting ED chief Sanjay Mishra’s tenure short, and asserted that the agency’s actions against the corrupt would continue as he came down heavily against the reactions of opposition parties.
“Those rejoicing over the SC decision on the ED case are delusional for various reasons. The amendments to the CVC Act, which were duly passed by Parliament, have been upheld,” Shah said. “Powers of the ED to strike at those who are corrupt and on the wrong side of the law remain the same,” he added.
Shah said the ED was an institution which rose beyond any one individual and was focused on achieving its core objective — to investigate offences of money laundering and violations of foreign exchange laws. “Thus, who the ED director is, that is not important because whoever assumes this role will take note of the rampant corruption of a cozy club of entitled dynasts who have an anti-development mindset,” Shah said in an apparent reference to the cases pending against politicians, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi from Congress and Bihar deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav, AAP leader Manish Sisodia as well as many others.
Shah’s assertion appears to echo the assessment in government circles that the ED, strengthened under Mishra, will retain its effectiveness under a new director. Political circles also emphasised that the sharp rise in actions by the anti money-laundering agency was inspired by the “political will” of the government and should continue apace under the new leadership so long as the regime’s priorities remain the same.
Congress general secretary Randeep Surjewala, who along with others had challenged the extensions for the ED chief, welcomed the SC order and said it had rendered invalid all the actions taken by the agency after November 17, 2021, when Mishra got the first of his two extensions the court declared invalid on Tuesday.
Close associates of Bhupesh Baghel and Hemant Soren, CMs of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, Telangana CM K Chandrasekhar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha and Tamil Nadu transport minister Senthil Balaji are some of the other politicians under ED scrutiny.
