The incident took place under DDU division of the east central railway (ECR) at around 7.07 am. According to sources, the train from Jammu to Sealdah, instead of stopping on platform number 3 at Bhabhua station, went on the wrong track despite the red signal and ran for about 2 km. Luckily, there was no train coming from any direction on the other track, officials said.
“Panicked passengers started crying when they realised that the train was moving on the wrong tracks. Fortunately, the pilot applied the emergency brake and stopped the train,” said an eyewitness.
On being informed, DDU divisional railway manager Rajesh Gupta rushed to the spot and took both the loco pilots off duty. A new crew was handed over the charge to pilot the train and the train resumed its journey after almost three hours.
