GHAZIABAD: The votes for the nine urban local bodies that went to polls on May 11 will be counted at three centres on Saturday. A total of 1,444 personnel have been pressed into service, besides cops, who will guard the centres and maintain law and order across the city, especially in sensitive areas.
“The counting of votes of the mayoral and councillors’ seats in GMC will be held at Govindpuri Anaj Mandi. Votes for Khoda-Makanpur and Dasna nagar panchayats will also be counted at the venue on Saturday,” an official from the district administration said.
Counting of votes for Modinagar and Muradnagar nagar palikas will be held at the Adarsh Kanya Inter College in Modinagar, while votes for Loni nagar palika seats will be counted at Loni Inter College. At the Govindpuri community centre in Modinagar, votes for Newari, Patla and Faridnagar nagar panchayats will be counted.
The fate of 1,836 candidates from across nine ULBs, which have a total of 294 wards, will be decided on Saturday. A total of 797 candidates in the race are women – including 72 for the mayoral and chairpersons’ seats.
A turnout of 41.4% was recorded in the area under Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. It was similar to the turnout the city saw in 2017 – 41.7%. Of 15.4 lakh voters registered in the city, 6.4 lakh people exercised their franchise on Thursday.
Across the nine urban local bodies in the district, the numbers were slightly better at 45.5%. The elections to the GMC is seen as a prestige fight before the 2024 general elections in which Uttar Pradesh will arguably hold the biggest stakes.
