Kozhikode: MS Swaminathan‘s daughter and former WHO chief scientist Dr Soumya Swaminathan has welcomed the Bharat Ratna for her father but pointed out that he would have been happy if it had come during his lifetime.
“Lots of awards and recognition came to him. But he was motivated more by the results of what he did on the ground and people’s love and affection. He always used to remember the farmers, their gratitude and love for him. That meant a lot to him,” Soumya said.
She said honouring Swaminathan would send a strong message to youth that it was not only film stars, sportspersons and celebrities who should be emulated but also scientists who worked quietly away from the limelight. “Their work has huge implications and impact on people around the world and also in the country. We need scientist role models for our youth. In that way, this (award) has come at a good time.”
