Sunita Rautela believes it is her jar of apple chutney that clinched the deal. Rautela, a marginal apple grower who formed an organisation to produce chutney and jam in Uttarkashi’s remote Jhala village, is among 1,800 special guests invited to attend the Independence Day celebrations in Delhi.

In March, she sent a jar of chutney to the PM and received a letter of appreciation from the PMO. Besides Rautela, a fisherfolk couple from Ganjam and a farmer couple from Kandhamal, in Odisha, have been invited.
Fifty nurses are also set to attend the event. “After Covid, people are more aware of the importance of nurses in running hospital services,” said Nidhi Bela, senior nursing officer at Delhi’s RML Hospital.

The pickle must have been good. And the hard work that went behind it compelling enough to be noticed by the Prime Minister’s Office. Four months after Sunita Rautela, a marginal apple grower in a remote Uttarkashi village, sent a jar of chutney to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she has been invited – as a special guest – to New Delhi to attend this year’s Independence Day celebrations.
Rautela, 40, with the help of her husband, rallied 162 villagers, mostly women, from Jhala in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district, and formed a farmer-producer organisation (FPO) – Upla Taknor Krishak Utpadak Sanghatan – in May last year. The organisation produces apple chutney and jam.
Rautela, like most marginal apple growers in Jhala, was barely managing to make ends meet till even about a year ago. However, with institutional support from the UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) as well as the hard work of fellow villagers, she became a catalyst of change for a number of apple growers there.
